Ces migrants composés de 79 hommes et de 3 femmes sont tous des Sénégalais qui avaient quitté le Sénégal pour rallier l'Espagne par la mer. Dans un Tweet, Salvamento Maritimo informe que "la recherche a été coordonnée par CCS Tenerife, l'avion Helimer 201 et l'avion Sesmar 101" .
