La messe de Pentecôte a eu lieu, cette année, dans le nouveau sanctuaire. Dans le cadre de la célébration de la 135e édition du pèlerinage marial de Popenguine, les fidèles venus d’un peu partout à travers le Sénégal et même à l’étranger ont occupé toutes les places. Certains même étaient obligés de se mettre sous des tentes aménagées tout autour du nouveau lieu de culte. Des écrans géants ont été installés pour permettre à ceux qui sont à l’extérieur de l’édifice de suivre la cérémonie présidée par l’évêque de Tambacounda, Mgr Paul Abel Mamba. L’animation est assurée par la coordination des chorales dudit diocèse, qui couvre les régions de Tambacounda et Kédougou.
Par ailleurs, les fidèles ont été émerveillés par ce bijou construit par le président de la République, Macky Sall, dans le cadre de son programme de modernisation des cités religieuses. Pourtant, ce sanctuaire d’un coût de 2,5 milliards n’a été construit qu’à moitié. Il sera certainement livré totalement avant le prochain pèlerinage. Malgré le fait qu’il soit inachevé, les fidèles ont déjà fait montre de leur satisfaction. « C’est vraiment beau ce que nous avons vu. Nous remercions le chef de l’Etat et son gouvernement qui ont bien voulu nous offrir ce joyau », a dit Joséphine. Même tonalité chez Pierre selon qui l’espace est grand et il permet de faire les cérémonies dans de bonnes conditions.
Le projet de construction du nouveau sanctuaire marial de Popenguine vient donc combler le besoin de la communauté chrétienne qui célèbre Marie chaque année. Cette cité religieuse abrite donc ce gigantesque projet salué par toute une communauté.
